Tackle Space Debris & Build a Sustainable Future in Space – Apply for the Orbiting Sustainability Workshop in Grenoble!

Did you know that millions of pieces of space debris are currently orbiting Earth, threatening satellites and, therefore our day-to-day lives, scientific missions, and future space exploration? Despite its critical impact, orbital pollution remains an invisible challenge in mainstream discussions.

Join us in changing that!

The Orbiting Sustainability Workshop is an exciting, hands-on event bringing together 18 students from Aalto University, Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA), and Universidade de Lisboa to tackle the challenge of orbital pollution. Taking place in Grenoble, France, this June, the workshop is part of a two-phase project aimed at raising awareness and driving action.

What to expect?

Phase 1: On-Site Workshop in Grenoble (11-14 June)

A 3-day intensive workshop where selected students will:

  • Learn about space sustainability and orbital debris from other expert students and student-led initiatives

  • Discuss possible solutions and mitigation initiatives.

  • Collaborate in teams to design creative awareness and advocacy strategies

  • Build connections with peers from different disciplines and universities

  • Enjoy networking activities, including a walking tour of Grenoble

The programme is free of charge. The organization will cover essential expenses such as accommodation, meals (including lunch for all participants), and travel arrangements. For local students from Université Grenoble Alpes, only meals will be provided, as they do not require accommodation or travel support.

Phase 2: Outreach & Impact at Your University

After the workshop, you’ll return to your university with a concrete dissemination strategy - a plan to engage students, faculty, and the wider community about orbital pollution through an event, social media campaigns, or other creative initiatives. We’ll support you with resources, guidance, and networking opportunities to help bring your ideas to life!

Who can apply?

We’re looking for students (Bachelor's, Master's or PhD) from Aalto University, UGA, and ULisboa who are passionate about:

  • Space sustainability
  • Science communication & advocacy
  • Engineering, environmental science, policy, or design
  • No prior experience is required - just curiosity, motivation, and a willingness to collaborate!
