The QS World University Rankings by Subject was published on 28 February, and it covers 48 disciplines. Aalto University's ranking in the subject of Art & Design climbed to 9th in the world from last year’s 13th. Architecture & Built Environment rose to 46th place, while the previous ranking was 51–100.

'This is a fantastic achievement, as the competition among universities is very tight. We at Aalto University believe that art, creativity and design can really reform society; it allows us to challenge and question the norms as well as produce new knowledge and understanding,' says Anna Valtonen, Dean of the School of Arts, Design and Architecture.

In the QS World University Rankings by Subject, also Aalto’s Business came among top 100 (51–100).

Aalto ranked among 101–150 in the following subjects: electrical engineering, materials science and accounting & finance. Among 151–200 were chemical engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, economics and communication.

The QS rankings by subject emphasise both the university's reputation in the world of academia and among employers, as well as research publications and references that they get. The significance of these factors is subject-based.

The QS World University Rankings also compares universities as a whole. In 2017, Aalto University ranked 137. The QS Top 50 under 50 listing published in July put Aalto University as 7th in the world in a ranking of universities founded less than 50 years ago.

Aalto University specialises in technology, business and arts, for which reason the most relevant rankings for Aalto University are the rankings by field or subject. Depending on the way calculated, there are between 17 000 and 22 000 universities in the world.
