Shaking up Tech – Support Diversity in Technology

Research shows that diverse groups can examine problems from a wider range of perspectives and, as a result, develop better solutions. However, Finland’s workforce remains strongly segregated by gender, with stark divisions between so-called ‘men's fields and women's fields’ compared to other EU countries. Among applicants to technology fields, the share of women has risen in recent years to one-third. However, that is still not enough, as more skilled specialists are needed in technology.
Despite performing well in maths and science in upper secondary school, young women in Finland have had relatively low interest in pursuing studies and careers in technology. Contributing factors to this lack of interest include: stereotypes; a lack of role models and practical experience; uncertainty about the value of technology fields; and young women’s undervaluation of their own skills.
Antonia Eneh, an Industrial Engineering and Management student at Aalto UniversityA lack of diversity means that only certain kinds of problems get solved – leading to a world that doesn't have solutions for everyone.
Shaking up Tech encourages young people to enter the field of technology
Aalto University has a long tradition in technology education. We offer the widest range of technological programmes in Finland and are recognised as the country’s leading educator in technology, according to global university rankings. Gender disparity in technology is a serious social issue, and one that we strive to address through long-term, committed work.
In 2018, we organised the first Shaking up Tech event to encourage young women and gender minorities to apply for studies in the technology field. By motivating young people from diverse backgrounds to pursue careers in technology, our aim is to shape the future tech workforce.
Today, Shaking up Tech has grown into a broader initiative, with the event held annually in collaboration with other universities that offer technology education. It reaches hundreds of young people across Finland on the same day, as they stand on the verge of making their career choices. At Aalto University alone, 300–400 people participate in the event annually.
Through the event, we offer young people:
- The opportunity to gain a well-rounded understanding of technology fields, key industry players, and career opportunities.
- Role models they can relate to and that motivate them to pursue studies in the field.
- A chance to connect with peers who share similar interests, including fellow participants and current technology students.
- Confidence in their own skills and competencies to pursue studies in technology.
Marja Niemi, Head of Planning at Aalto UniversityAccording to feedback, participants in the Shaking up Tech event showed a significant increase in interest in pursuing a career in tech.
ÄûÃʵ¼º½ to support diversity in technology
For Finland's competitiveness, it's essential to bring people from diverse backgrounds into technology: to break boundaries, change perceptions, and think and build in new ways. Society also needs skilled women and gender minorities in decision-making positions, and the technology field offers optimal opportunities for that.
The Shaking up Tech event breaks old stereotypes and encourages young people from diverse backgrounds to explore careers in technology. Our goal is to enable as many young people as possible to participate, regardless of where they live or their financial situation. Your donation helps cover essential event-related costs such as travel, meals, and accommodation. With your support, we can offer hundreds of young people a free opportunity to see and experience firsthand the limitless possibilities that technology has to offer. Your donation not only promotes diversity in technology – it also contributes to building a more innovative Finland!
