Turnitin instructions for teachers

This page gives you detailed instructions on how you can use Turnitin in MyCourses as part of MyCourses's activities or as a stand-alone activity. You will also find help on interpreting the Similarity and AI reports, as well as details on the features available in Turnitin.

Graphic image.

In short

  • Turnitin can be used as part of MyCourses's Assignment, Quiz, and Workshop activities by enabling it in these activities or as a stand-alone submission box by using the Turnitin LTI 1.3 activity.
  • The similarity report enables you to see the original text from which the similarity was found and identify suspicious use of characters. You can easily give feedback to your students via the five channels available in the report tools.
  • Acquaint yourself with other relevant information via the navigation panel on the left.

Turnitin as part of MyCourses's Assignment, Forum, Quiz or Workshop activities

You can link Turnitin to the familiar MyCourses Assignment, Quiz, or Workshop activities, allowing you to use Turnitin's similarity check and AI detection via Turnitin's Feedback Studio interface. To do so,

  • turn on Edit mode
  • add or open the Assignment / Quiz / Workshop
  • open the Assignment / Quiz / Workshop settings tab
  • open Turnitin plagiarism plugin settings. The setting options are all intuitive and self-explanatory. You can get more information on each of the settings by clicking on the question-mark icon. The numbers in the list refer to the numbered items in the snapshot.
Turnitin plugin extension settings.
  1. Set Enable Turnitin to Yes and set the remaining settings appropriately.
  2. We recommended that students see the similarity report of their submissions.
  3. Decide whether the submission is stored in Turnitin's comparison database (choose Standard repository) (not recommended for drafts) or not (choose No repository). To check drafts, choose No repository.
  4. Choose Yes for these settings. You can disable them from the tool to view the similarity report.
  5. Choose No for these settings. If necessary, you can discount them from the similarity percentage in the similarity report viewer.
  6. If you use the MyCourses's Assignment rubric, don't use this.
  7. When Translated Matching is set to Yes, Turnitin compares student submissions that aren't in English to papers in English in the database by first translating the student submission to English. The comparison is made for a maximum of 150 000 characters (about 25 000 words) in the text.

View of the submission in the Assignment activity.

The similarity percentage of the similarity report is visible below the icon of the submitted file. Open the similarity report by clicking the percentage number or the pen icon. To view the AI report, first open the similarity report and then click the AI report button there.

Note 1: The Assignment activity has two date settings related to the submission deadline. The first, called Due date, is the date after which late submissions are allowed. (This corresponds to the setting Allow submissions after due date being enabled in the Turnitin activity.) This date is marked in the students' and teachers' MyCourses calendars. The second, called Cut-off date, is the absolute deadline after which submissions are no longer allowed (Cut-off date is the assignment activity setting in MyCourses; there is no corresponding setting in the Turnitin assignment activity.) This date is not marked in the MyCourses calendar.

Note 2: If a student's response in the Assignment, Workshop or Quiz activity does not meet the word count and file size requirements, the similarity report will not be generated (see How does Turnitin work).

Turnitin assignment

Adding a Turnitin assignment in a MyCourses workspace

You can use either the current Turnitin Assignment 2 activity or the new Turnitin LTI 1.3 activity to create a Turnitin submission box until 14 June 2026. From 15 June 2026 onwards, you can only use the Turnitin LTI 1.3 activity to create a new Turnitin submission box.

Planned schedule for the removal of Turnitin Assignment 2 activity

27.10.2025–14.6.2026 new assignments can be created and used; existing assignments can be used normally
15.6.2026–31.12.2026 activity is removed from selector, new assignments cannot be created; existing assignments can be used normally
1.1.2027  activity is completely phased out

Implementation schedule for Turnitin LTI 1.3 activity

27.10.2025 – 31.12.2025 testing period to familiarise with the new interface (pioneers can already adopt the activity)
1.1.2026 –> gradually replaces the previous version (see above for deactivation details of the previous version)

If the file size of a submission exceeds 100 MB, it must be split into parts of less than 100 MB and submitted separately in the designated Parts (in Turnitin Assignment 2 only) or submission boxes.

To add a Turnitin activity to your MyCourse workspace, turn on Edit mode, click the '+' button at the bottom of the section where you want to add the assignment, and choose either Turnitin Assignment 2 or Turnitin LTI 1.3 from the chooser.

Turnitin assignment 2

In Edit mode, select Turnitin Assignment 2. See . (The image of the activity chooser differs a little from the MyCourses view, but the functions are the same. The image of the MyCourses chooser is above.)

A note on parts

A submission box can contain several parts with different date settings. Work submitted in the different parts by the same student will not be compared when creating the originality report of a submission in a part (i.e., the submission in Part 1 will not be compared to the submission in Part 2), even if the option to store the work in the standard repository is selected in the submission box settings. The work of different students is compared. So, a submission box can be created containing, say, three parts, the first two for two versions of drafts and the third for the final version to be graded, all with a different Start date, Post date, and Due date.

If set to store submissions in the standard repository, this will be done on the Due date of the last part in the submission box.

A note on Post Date, the date when students see their feedback

Set the date after which the student can see the teacher's feedback and grade in Feedback Studio and the grade in the feedback box. If you set the date to be the same as Start Date, the student will see the feedback given as soon as it is given, even if given before Due Date. Naturally, by setting Post Date to be the same as Due Date, the feedback and possible grade will be visible to the student after that date.

Turnitin LTI 1.3

Creating a new submission box

In Edit mode, choose Turnitin LTI 1.3.

Click on the Select content button and provide the setting details in the pop-up window.

Turnitin LTI 1.3 Assignment creation form with fields for title, instructions, max grade, start date, due date, and feedback release date.

Provide the requested information in the form: Title (assignment name), any instructions regarding the assignment, maximum grade information, dates related to the submission box, and enable PeerMark if using Turnitin's workshop tool (similar to Feedback Fruits and MyCourses's Workshop).

Click on Optional Settings.

Optional Settings to create submission box for paper submission and similarity reports, including options for late submissions and student access to reports.

Of the optional settings in the screenshot, think about at least the following settings:

  1. Submit papers to: here, you can set whether submissions are stored in Turnitin's standard repository (comparison database) or not. By default, submissions are not stored in the standard repository. Aalto University does not have its own institutional repository in use. Choose either Do not store submitted papers or Standard Paper Repository.
  2. Allow late submissions.

By taking Enable anonymous marking into use, you won't see students' names when assessing their submissions.

We recommend that students can see the similarity report of their submissions. This setting is on by default.

More optional settings for the Turnitin LTI 1.3 submission box. The screenshot show the options of the repositories against which comparisons are made.

By default, submissions are compared to all the sources available for comparison.

When you are ready, click on the Submit button.

More information on the settings can be found in .

Toolbar of the Turnitin LTI 1.3 submission box. The gear icon opens the settings form of the submission box.

Changing the settings of a submission box

First, open the submission box. You can then open the settings of the submission box by clicking on the gear wheel.

The similarity report

Open the similarity report by double-clicking on the similarity percentage or the coloured rectangle alongside. The report will open in Turnitin's viewing tool called Feedback Studio. In addition to viewing possible similarities and their sources in the submitted text, you can give feedback to your students in several ways via the tool. Acquaint yourself with the flag feature. See the .

The AI writing report

The AI tool does not have any controls. It automatically creates the AI report when the submission meets the required conditions (see here or in for details). See Turnitin's guide for the we're using at Aalto University.

Turnitin's guide also contains useful material on the subject, in particular, the in the case of a high AI writing score.

PeerMark: Turnitin's peer review tool

PeerMark is another alternative to FeedbackFruits and MyCourses's Workshop activity. FeedbackFruits is by far the most versatile of these peer-review tools, but PeerMark also has its uses. It is easy to set up as part of a Turnitin Assignment. For details on using PeerMark, see .

Other useful features

The Turnitin Assignment has an anonymous grading feature that is useful to minimise biases, namely, confirmational bias (), that we may have. Setting up anonymous grading is easy. Read more about and in Turnitin's guide.

Turnitin LTI 1.3 has an Assignment Copy feature that allows you to copy assignment setups from earlier submission boxes (Turnitin calls them classes). See . You can also as before.

Submitting on behalf of the student

Normally, students themselves directly submit papers in a Turnitin submission box. Sometimes, a student may submit their work to the teacher through some other method, in which case the teacher can submit the work in Turnitin on their behalf. Remember, however, that The Code of Academic Integrity requires students to be treated equally, and so such flexibility, if permitted, should apply to all students.

  1. Open the Turnitin submission box in your MyCourses course. If there is no Turnitin assignment activity in the course workspace yet, see the instructions above on how to add it.
  2. If the student whose paper will be submitted is not listed in the Turnitin submission box, add them as a participant to the MyCourses workspace. Go to Course home page → Participants → Enroll users → type the name of the student in the Search field and choose the right student from the search results → ensure that the Assign role = Student
  3. Submit the file on the student's behalf:
Turnitin Assignment 2: click the icon with an upward arrow (the icon looks like a cloud with an arrow in it) in the row with the student's name in a submission inbox and drag and drop the file in the submission area.
