Electronic examinatios: Safe Exam Browser for on-campus electronic exams
MyCourses offers a quiz mode that is specifically compatible with SEB.
In short
- With the MyCourses Quiz activity, you can create an electronic exam that works with the SEB (Safe Exam Browser) on students' personal devices.
- SEB prevents access to other websites and applications during the exam.
- It is important for students to prepare their computers in advance by downloading and testing the SEB application.
- It is advisable to organize the exam so that there is one task per page, which facilitates saving answers and transitioning to a paper exam if needed.
- There should be a supervisor present during the exam session to assist with technical issues, and students should be given clear instructions beforehand.
MyCourses offers a quiz mode that is specifically compatible with SEB. Students can bring their own laptops to a classroom and take the exam using SEB, which prevents them from accessing unauthorized resources during the exam. However, it is important to give clear instructions to students and to test the system before the exam to ensure that their laptops are compatible with SEB. Additionally, you should have someone present in the room to monitor students and answer any questions or address technical problems. It is also a good idea to have paper exams available as a backup in case of unexpected technical issues.
Safe Exam Browser (SEB) - Creating a Quiz Activity in MyCourses Workspace
In the Safe Exam Browser (SEB), create a Quiz activity in the MyCourses workspace. Afterward, restrict Quiz access so that it can only be taken using the separate Safe Exam Browser software. Steps:
- Create an exam in MyCourses with the Quiz activity: Make sure you have the following settings:
- Timing: Enable Open the quiz, Close quiz and Time limit. Use time limit according to the exam time. Open the quiz should match the time when the exam starts and Close the quiz with a time buffer in case of technical problems, for example extra 15 minutes.
- Attempts allowed: 1.
- Review options: uncheck every option besides the During the attempt: The attempt. Instructions for .
- Extra restrictions on attempts section, provide an initiation password for the exam. The initiation password will be displayed in the exam room, allowing students to start the exam. Avoid using special characters in the password (ä/ö/å) of letters that are easily misinterpeted.
- Design the exam with one exam question per page, allowing students to navigate between pages, with MyCourses saving answers at these points. This facilitates switching to a paper exam.
- Enable Safe Exam Browser in the Quiz settings. Modify the Safe Exam Browser settings as follows:
Double-check the following settings in "Safe Exam Browser":
- Under "Show 'Exit Safe Exam Browser' button, configured with this quit link," use the following address format: /en
- Set an exit password for emergencies in the "Quit password" section. Avoid using special characters in the password (ä/ö/å) or easily missunderstood signs (like letter O and number 0). Note: Do not provide the exit password to students, as it allows exiting the SEB state and normal device usage. In case of emergencies, the teacher or supervisor can enter the exit password. After the exam, the exit password can be shared with students to prevent anyone from being stuck in SEB.
- In the "Show Wi-Fi control" section, select "Yes."
Extended Time for the Exam:
- On quiz page, choose More and Overrides.
- Add user override.
- Add student or students to Override user. Students need to be participants in the workspace.
- Change Close the quiz and time limit according to additional time.
- Attemps allowed: 1.
- Save
Draft of instructions for the electronic SEB exam to be shared with students (teachers can copy this template, edit as needed, and include it in the exam instructions):
Course Exam and Retake Exam Conducted as Supervised Hall Exams
The course exam and retake exam will be conducted as supervised hall exams, with students completing the exam electronically on their own computers in the exam hall. The arrangements for the exam are managed by Aalto University School's Learning Services.
Participation in the exam requires advance preparation on your part as described below.
Preparations to be made well in advance:
- You can take the exam on a PC (Windows) or a Mac (macOS).
- The exam can only be taken using the Safe Exam Browser program, which you must download to your computer in advance. This program "locks" the exam space so that during the exam, the computer cannot access anywhere other than the exam area.
Well in Advance of the Exam:
- Download and install the Safe Exam Browser program (SEB) on your computer. It is available for free from the website: . Ensure that you have the latest version of the program on your computer.
- Take a technical test exam available in the course area. The technical test exam does not contain content questions; its purpose is solely to ensure that the installation of the SEB program on your computer is successful, and that MyCourses SEB exams work on your computer as they should. The password needed to start the test exam is xxxx. (In case of any issues, and your computer locks, go to the exam supervisor; they will provide you with the password needed to exit the SEB state, but this is not normally required.)
It is not possible to set up SEB installation and testing during the actual exam session, so ensure well in advance that your computer functions in the exam as it should.
Preparations Close to the Exam:
- Charge your computer battery fully and bring it to the exam. The duration of the exam is xxxx (x) hours. Note that there are very few power outlets in the exam halls, and a seat with an outlet cannot be guaranteed.
- Bring a laptop, a photo ID, and a charged mobile phone with you to handle Aalto's multi-stage login (possibly also the laptop's power cord).
- Ensure that you remember your username and password. They are required for the exam and passwords saved on the computer are not accessible at that time.
- Also, bring a pen in case you need to switch to a paper exam due to technical issues.
Exam procedure:
-
The exam will start in different rooms at staggered times (if there are more than 200 examinees) to avoid a temporary overload of the MyCourses system. (The room assignments based on the first letter of your last name and the staggered start times are as follows.) If you are late for the start time of your room, you will be directed to the next room, but PLEASE NOTE that no students will be admitted to any room after xx:xx. All students will have their identity checked before entering the room, so please arrive at the entrance to your room at least 20 minutes before the start of the exam. ROOM ALLOCATION e.g.:
13:00 Room XX:
13:15 Room XX:
13:30 Room XX
- You will use Aalto's wireless network "aalto" or "aalto open." This requires multifactor authentication (MFA), so you must have your mobile phone with you, which you normally use for Aalto's multifactor authentication login. After logging in, leave your mobile phone on the table, turned off and face down. If for some reason you need to log in again during the exam, raise your hand to call the invigilator.
- Open the exam from the MyCourses course area (found in the last section of the course area), and Safe Exam Browser will take you to log in to the MyCourses system again, after which you will be taken directly to the exam. Remember your username and password, as Safe Exam Browser cannot access any passwords that may be stored on your computer.
- To start the exam, you will also need a password that will be distributed in the exam hall. You can only take the exam with the password during the exam opening hours and only once.
- When you are finished, submit your exam to the MyCourses system and take your belongings to the exam supervisor. Do not close the exam window or shut down your computer. The exam supervisor will check your ID and verify that your exam is in the "submitted" state on your computer. You can then close the exam and exit from the Safe Exam Browser by clicking the power button in the lower right corner.
- If you encounter any problems, you can also take the exam/continue the exam on paper. In this case, ask the exam supervisor for a paper exam. MyCourses automatically saves the answers you have written so far every time you move to a new page in the exam. If you suspect that your battery might run out, etc., you can keep a record on scrap paper of which questions you have already answered in the electronic system.
